In order tocommunicate effectively, message presenters must choose a medium thatis suitable for their desired objective. Additionally, messagepresenters must modify the message for the audience, which replicatesan understanding of the reader`s motivations, and concerns.
Inthe short commercial advertisement video “German coast guard-lostin translation," the director uses a combination of skills todemonstrate the significance of language and communication. The videobegins in a dark, poorly lit room without notable windows, two men,an operator, and a trainee standing facing one another. One of theguards is an older man with a potbelly, speaking short sentences inGerman language (Smith, 2006).
Additionally,the older man pointed to a chart pinned to the wall. They also woreblack trousers, neckties, and short-sleeved shirts. The viewermaythink that uniform was called for in this state of affairs. As thevideo plays on, the young man carefully as in the first instance satat a small table, which placed next to a workstation composed ofcomplex electronic equipment. On the table, an old dim lamp barelygave light.

Asthe supervisor steps out, the trainee makes himself at rest in the80’s style spin chair, takes a deep inhalation, and slowly breathesout. Unexpectedly, a quick radio bleeps out of a particular oldmachine disrupts the short comfort of the trainee followed by wordsin a British tone of voice: “Mayday! Mayday! Hello! Can you hearus? Can you…”
Thedistress call was discontinued by a hissing noise, as though thesignal was feeble and odd beeping sounds mimicking Morse code werehardly heard in the surrounding. The part picks up up again: “Over.”The call continues, “We are sinking!” Then at one time moreslowly, “WE ARE SINKING!” The trainee moves towards themicrophone.
Eventually,he flicks on the button make and actives the microphone, leaned inits direction, saying “Hello.” He continued incredibly saying:“Zis iz ze German Coastguard.” The person on the other endcontinued distressedly: “We are going down! The German trainee responds backby saying “What are you sinking (thinking) about?” The main pointof the video is made clear in the end, “Improve your English"(Smith, 2006).
Consideringthis, the video makes fun of a potentially dangerous situation.However, it draws the audience’s attention to the real message ofthe video “Know English!” This video is a perfect illustration ofpoor verbal communication effort. Employees should always be wellversed in a wide range of communication tasks such as communicatingethically, expressing ideas, and actively listening. Focusing onthose essential areas, employees, or individuals in general canimprove and become better communicators (Guffeyet al., 2013).
UsingHumor in communication can help express ideas, additionally, leave amemorable impression on the audience. However,in the video, the manager did not take time to check whether thetrainee understood anything concerning the job. He left the traineeto perform his duties alone. Consequently, human communication can becomplex and, as a result, messages can be lost or misinterpreted(Sorman, 2013).
Additionally,getting feedback from the audience can help evaluate theeffectiveness of a person`s message. With so many visual and audiostimulations in today’s technological world, it sometimes becomesdifficult to send and receive messages, but selecting the appropriatemedia for the task can help to alleviate this barrier ofcommunication (Guffeyet al., 2013).

Thevideo could have ended with a statement like the one they used –“knowEnglish” to rouse the audience to action. Modifying the message inthis way would make it more understandable to the reader and increasethe chances that a person`s intended message is received. The essenceof communication is sharing— providing insights, data, andinformation in an exchange that benefits both the person who isconveying a message and the corresponding party (Sorman, 2013).

Thecommunication process is complex and is made up of many differentconcepts and forms. When it comes to business, communication skillsare essential to career success (Sorman, 2013).

As aresult, the info graphic is hard to read comprehend. Consequently, itmakes the reader strain while trying to read the presented data. Inaddition, it removes all the attention away from the actual message.As for that reason, I would suggest that International Trade Updateuses large and simpler info graphic designs to make it easy for thereader to understand (Bovee & Thill, 2013).
