The choice ofan official language by different countries in different continentsis determined by the number of people who use it among other factors. The development and the expansion of English is so diverse that itshould be recognized as the official language worldwide (Downer3).This makes it a rational decision in the world to use Englishlanguage as the main official language. The discussion in this paperwill illustrate that the English language should be used andrecognized as the official language worldwide.

First,English is the most common language in the world, with no otherlanguage matching the extensive use of English globally. This isbecause English-speaking countries in the world are many and morethan the countries that use other language. Consequently, thelanguage is known and spoken by over 1.5 billion speakers (Downer24).This means that most people in the world are influenced by thelanguage and have some of their values reflecting the English values. Moreover, many countries have recognized English as the officiallanguage in their internal communication. Currently, over 51countries use English as the official language, even those that arenot native English speakers. This gives the reason why Englishlanguage should be recognized as an official language in the world.

TheEnglish language is the most suited to be the official languageglobally because of the advancements in technology. With the worldpopulation gradually circling into a global village, technology istaking the center stage of promoting the communication in thevillage. At the same time, English is the most used language as themode of interaction between the technological application and theusers. The internet and web based application also uses English asthe most common language. Consequently, many people encounter thelanguage on a regular basis. Therefore, the language should be madean official language globally.

Despiteall the reasons pointing to English as the most appropriate officiallanguage globally, the opponents argue that nationalism of individualcountries will be lost is English. However, this is not true becauseEnglish is just a foreign language, and does not interfere withindividual countries’ native values and nationalistic loyalty. Inaddition, proponents argue that the adoption of the English languageas the official language will erode the native languages world-wide.Similarly, this is not true because English language will provide thesecond or third language of communication, thereby will not erode thenative language (Downer9).Finally, the English language will not diminish the culturaldiversities of different world users as argued by opponents. This isbecause the recognition as the official language does not change thecultural practices of the natives, but facilitates the sharing ofsuch practices with the world.

Englishshould be recognized as an official language in the world because ithas the highest number of speakers globally. In addition, English isalready the most recognized language as an official language in mostcountries globally.
