Ethicalissues in Wal-Mart
Theethical issues faced by Wal-Mart employees are unique to thisorganization. Wal-Mart Company was accused of allowing sexualdiscrimination according to the promotion policies practice in thecompany. The accusations were based on information that in year 2001women employees were 65 percent of hourly workers, but womencomprised just 33 percent of managers at Wal-Mart. In Wal-Mart, newemployees have to wait about half a year to be enrolled in healthbenefits plan. Retired employees are not eligible for health benefitsprogram. In year 2000, Wal-Mart settled the class-action charge inColorado for about $50 million when the sixty-nine thousand formerand current Wal-Mart employees complained that they worked for thecompany without getting any compensation (Kneer, 2009).
Idisagree with the statement that women in Wal-Mart are not interestedwith management positions. The reasons being the depositions providedby the company employees for lawsuit indicated that one manager to awoman that a certain man was promoted rather than a qualified womansince the man had family to support. In another deposition, in SouthCarolina Wal-Mart store a manager informed a woman that majority ofmen receive greater salary than women because according to bible, Evewas created after Adam. A plaintiff in a lawsuit claimed that thestore manager informed her that in Wal-Mart me work for career butwomen do not work for career. Moreover, a store told a woman thatretail is for homemakers who desire to make some extra money (Kneer,2009). Other claims in lawsuit included the stripper performing atthe store meeting to celebrate a manager’s birthday as well asmanagement’s referring women employees as “Janie Q” or “girl.”
Wal-Marthealth policy issues are not ethical issues because the policy dealswith health matters of employees. Ethics is concerned with what iscorrect and what is incorrect. Ethics relate to just evaluations ofresolutions and actions correct or incorrect based on normallyaccepted principles of conduct, in simple words, ethics are the moralprinciples and values that monitor the activities or decisions of aperson or group. They serve as rules on how to act correctly andimpartially when faced with moral dilemmas. Occasionally the linebetween what is considered right and wrong is difficult todifferentiate since it depends on factors such as culture,nationality and many other factors. Individuals have differentperspective of ethics. Some actions can be unethical even yet no lawhas been breached (Halbert & Ingulli, 2009).
Wal-Martshould be concerned with unionization of its store workers becausethere are several benefits that workers gain. Those benefits includes
Generally,unionized employees earn more than the non-union workers performingsimilar task do. The wages of unionized workers can be discussed andset out in the contract. This makes sure that individuals who dosimilar job are paid equally.
Pensionplans, Health care, as well as other benefits
Aworkplace with unionized workers have high chances of havinghealthcare plan that covers accidents and sickness, dental care, aswell as pension plan that employer contributes. Moreover, it islikely that unionized employees have better vocational remunerationthan non-unionized workers have.
Fora union member, the working hours are based on the seniority. Anemployer must schedule the eight hours shifts before the seven hoursshifts, and end with four hours shifts (Halbert & Ingulli, 2009).
