Fromthe article, the following are the points that are to be critiqued

  1. The best results were on the face: of the 21 spots treated 15 had 75% pigmentation, and 16 had 50% pigmentation or greater. Other areas (neck, extremities, trunk, and genitals) had moderate response in comparison to the face

  2. The least response was on the hands and feet of the 5 spots treated only 20% showed 50% pigmentation or more

  3. Recently, the 308-nm excimer laser has been shown to be promising for the treatment of localized vitiligo

  4. If burning or blistering occurred, a treatment was held until the skin healed. Treatment resumed at one-half minimal erythema dose less than the blistering dose

  5. Skin type played an important role in patient response. Of those patients who developed 75% pigmentation or more, none of them were skin type I.

Point

Problem with the point

Why it is a problem

Suggested improvements and why

A

The method is perceived as effective, but is only effective on treating spots on the face

Neck extremities, trunk and genitals were indicated to have a moderate response compared to face. This implies that the method cannot be effective or relied for spots that are not on the face. For instance, spots on the trunk and genitals. The method did not point out why the response was moderately effective in other areas compared to the response for spots on the face.

The method should be tested well on spots that are not on the face in order to indicate why it is not effective on these regions. On understanding the reasons why the method was not effective on treating spots on these areas, the method would be in a position to treat all the spots regardless of their area of attack.

B

There was a less response on the legs and feet, but the research did not account for this response.

This is a problem because the method cannot be applied to yield a high response for the spots on the legs and feet. This is because the research could not find out why the response was less when it came to legs and feet. Although the method is depicted as effective in treating vitiligo, this point depicts the method as ineffective since there is less response in regard to legs and feet, which the cause has not been identified to make the method effective.

This can be improved through identifying the reasons behind the method being less responsive for the spots on legs and feet. By identifying the reasons why the method is less effective on the legs and feet, there will be an improvement on the effectiveness of the method on these areas.

C

The method is only promising on the treatment of localized vitiligo

There are several vitiligo such as segmental, generalized, and mucosal vitiligo, which this research has been capable of identifying however, it is indicated that the method that has been depicted as effective in the treatment of vitiligo only works best for the localized vitiligo. The research did not indicate why the method is not suitable for treating segmental, generalized, and mucosal vitiligo.

The suggested improvement entails the research identifying why the method is not effective in treating other vitiligos apart from the localized vitiligo. This suggestion will help in improving the research being investigated since it will help in coming up with a solution that will make the method effective in treating other vitiligos, including mucosal, generalized and segmental vitiligo. This will be critical in enhancing the effectiveness of the method.

D

Although the method is depicted to be effective than other methods of treating vitiligo, it is indicated to have some side effects.

The method is indicated to have side effects such as burning or blistering. This has an effect of lowering the effectiveness of the method.

This problem can be improved by seeking a solution to the side effects of the method. This will add to the effectiveness of the method in treating vitiligo.

E

Although it is indicated that skin type played a part in patient response, the ratios of the skin types included in the research was not uniform.

This is a problem because lack of uniform ratios of skin types made patients with skin type I not have a notable response.

This problem can be improved by having uniform skin type ratios that can help in having notable responses amid the different patients having varied skin types. This is critical in noting the effectiveness of the method with different skin types.
