Impactof IOM Report on Nursing
Thedynamism in the demographic properties of the United Statespopulation has brought about many challenges in the management andintegration of workforce in the field of health care. Health careservices have embraced various laws governing other sectors of theeconomy. A code of ethics has been laid down to be followed by allthe medical practitioners. This code is contained in a report by theInstitute of Medicine. The report closely examines the various rolesof nurses, their responsibilities and the educational requirement toenhance quality service delivery. There is a set standard in thelevel of education so as to meet the emerging changes in the healthcare sector. Some of the dynamism encountered in the health sectorincludes the aging population and also different demographicpatterns. It is this report that covers the correlation betweenhealth needs of the patients and the capacity of the nurses to handlethose needs (DeNisco, 2013). Nursing is a noble profession whichrequires the practitioners to observe ethics in their professionalduty.

The above are just but a fewinstances which necessitate the members of the nursing profession tofurther their studies and research.
First,the report recommends high levels of training and education amongnurses. There is a distinction between the form of education attainedby nurses in the twenty-first century and that of the twentiethcentury. Complexities in the environment of operation and also thepatient call for a high level of education (DeNisco, 2013). It is arequirement for nurses to possess the necessary skills to facilitatetheir performance at workplace. The spirit of teamwork is encouragedamongst nurses in their daily operations. Another impact of the recommendation of the report is theminimum requirements for one to join the profession of nursing(Sherwood, 2012). There has also been an emphasis to increase thenumber of nurses so as to lower the ratio of nurse to patients.Another impact in the education sector is a special training to meetspecial needs of the various population groups. Research is anotherarea that is emphasized by the report. Nurses are required to workhand on hand with experienced physicians to gain from their expertise(Finkelman, 2009).
Thereport has also resulted in the impact of the nursing practicesespecially primary care towards the patients (DeNisco, 2013). Servicedelivery towards the various special groups has been enhanced by thevarious recommendations from the report. Nurses have been encouragedto improve in the area of attending to the emerging new patients’needs. The rise of chronic disease in the entire population hasfacilitated the need for nurses to further their studies. Specialtrainings are offered at nursing schools to improve on the quality ofthe education gained by nurses. There is a challenge for the nurses toobserve professionalism in their duties. Leadership skills areparamount in tackling the various patients’ needs (Finkelman,2009). Those who are in leadership positions are encouraged toresearch on the various managerial and leadership roles.
Educationadvancement geared towards improving the leadership skills isencouraged (Sherwood, 2012). It is in the report that nurses areencouraged to integrate their leadership skills and their profession.All this is geared towards quality service delivery in meeting thevarious patients’ needs. The report also emphasis on the formationof nursing bodies with the sole aim of encouraging growth ofleadership skills. There is also a proposal for the integration ofprivate sector in the running of government based organizations. Thereport also emphasizes on the necessity to transformative leadership(DeNisco, 2013). Nurses are encouraged to work hand in hand with theindustry practitioners so as to benefit from their expertise.
Itis clearly evident from an in-depth analysis of the report thatnurses should enhance their educational levels through training. Onehas to have the full qualifications in terms of education andtraining before joining the profession. The education system designedfor nursing course should be a progressive one whereby one canfurther the studies in a seamless way. Proper data collectionrelating to the health care workforce should be collected and be keptin a safe custody. Nurses should be in a position to address thevarying needs of the entire population. This includes necessaryskills to handle the aging population, as well as the younggeneration. There is a call for transformative leadership in thefield of nursing to meet the various needs of the patients. Nursesshould undertake special educational skills in relation to theemerging issues such as leadership and new diseases.
