Communicationskillsare anotherimportantskillrequiredby lawenforcementofficers.Itis imperativethatlawenforcementofficerintroducethemselves whenever theycomein contactwith thepublic(Kurke&amp Scrivner, 2013, p.65).Thevolumeof toneof voiceshould alsobekeptat a point that doesnotconveythewrongmessageto thepublic.Itis of paramountimportantthatofficersdonot expresstheir anger,ridicule,frustrationandfearthrough increasingthevolumeof their voiceas thismight yieldnegativereactionfrom membersof thepublic.Loudcommandingis necessaryforsomescenario,butofficersshould striveto remaincalm and composed.

Researchshowsthat30percent of theinformationwe hear and believe froman individual result from speech, the rest is as a result of bodylanguage.Thismeansthathavingskillson howto usebodylanguagesappropriatelyis crucialin policing.Bodylanguagessuchas facial expression,gesturesandeyecontactspeakvolumesof informationabout an officer.Bodylanguagemay helpan officerhind frustration,confusionandangerwhich may be misconstruedby thepublic.Self-controlis an importantelementin lawenforcement.Anofficermust endeavorto exerciserestraintwhenever confrontedby an irritatedcitizen.An officershould focuson thematterat handandreactto complaintsby individualsratherthan respondingto thepoignantexpressionof thecomplaint((Kurke &amp Scrivner, 2013, pp.267-268). In thecourseof their dutycitizensmight offensively directtheir frustrationandangeragainst officers.Officer’sreactionshould not aggravatethesituationbutshould begearedtowards reducingstressandtension.Whiledoingall thisofficersshould neverusedemeaning wordsthat willridiculethecitizenignitingaggressivetendencies.Everyofficershould be ableto applygoodjudgment,andresolveproblemsamicably.

Lawenforcementofficersshould demonstrateassertiveness. Beingassertivemeansfallingat themiddleof beingpassiveandaggressive.Bothextremesare disastrous,whenan officeris passive,heorshemay neverbe ableto vocalize their needs,andiftheyare aggressivetheywillbetermedas bullies.Beingassertiveenablesofficersto be ableto clearlyexpress their needs and desireswhilerespectingtheprivilegesandneedsof membersof thecommunity

Conclusion

Lawenforcementofficersshould demonstrateassertiveness, self-control,possess excellent communicationskillsand use of body languages to be able to serve in their capacity ascustodian of the law.
