THE IMPACT OF FACEBOOK ON PRIVATE SAFETY AND SECURITY AMONGTEENAGERS

New technology introduction and specifically in social media hasactually changed people lives in the way to form friendship and shareinformation. It has extended the traditional form of friendship toinclude virtual and physical friends. It means that people are ableto meet online true friend requests despite the fact that they don’tknow each other and becomes friends. Such people may not or nevermeet but keep on sharing the information. This new technology hasreally impacted more on youths than adults. A research carried out inUnited States revealed that a youth has an average of 300 friends inFacebook and about 79 followers on Twitter (Dakin, 2014). This meansthat youths have trust on people they have never met physically andare able to share any information with them. As a result, one’sprivacy in such social media has declined due to anyone accessingprivate information on one’s account profile.

A lot of technological innovations have taken place and one exampleof it is internet. Currently, internet is the most efficient tool forbusiness transactions, communication, online networking and research. It has enabled us to get involved in various events which we deemnecessary for our lives. For now, we focus on the effect of Facebookas a social network which plays an important role on the personalsafety and security of all Facebook users who uses it as a socialnetwork (Roberts, 2008).

Private online security and safety by use of Facebook is a commonproblem due to a lot of people getting access to internet. A lot ofpeople create malicious posts, fake photos, fake names and misusedprofiles.

The article “How safe your Facebook profile?” which was authoredby Wallbridge (2009) is crucial scholarly source used to explain thetopic of the effect of internet on individual’s Facebook profileprivacy. The article is crucial since it illustrates how social mediahas led to lack of control on users personal information which affectother individuals’ private profiles. Facebook has always been proneto dangerous pictures, videos and online threats formed randomindividuals. According to Wallbridge (2009),

Through placement of personal information on the World Wide Web,users make themselves vulnerable to online predators, providing theirinformation to third parties and in some cases, websites owningeverything an individual places on their profile page or friend’spage, including photos.

Many of these incidents are actually targeting the youths as theirvictims, who are not concerned on privacy and security of theirFacebook accounts. The following videos, podcasts, and blogspresented below are illustrations whichprovide information that addresses the topic of online private safetyand security, specifically on Facebook.

According to Safe Smart Social(2013), there are a lot of means through which youths get troubles byusing Facebook sites. Mistakes done by youths includes addition of their middle names, schools attended, email, birthday, and phonenumber on their profile, which are regarded as private information onthe user and are not really necessary to mention still on theirprofile. Concerning its biasness, the author is more concerned on theway youths misuse their Facebook application to be a threat tostrangers and is always one-sided. Despite the fact that the topicspecifically provides illustrations on the troubles which majority ofteenagers have endured through use of Facebook, majority of topics orheadlines highlighted in the video provides insight into whateducators and parents are supposed to do and why they need todiscuss the social media with their children. The validity andapplicability of information being discussed may really be anefficient way of teaching children lessons on security and privacyand this will be of great assistance in ignoring the threats arisingfrom use of social network sites from internet. In addition, theideas or information regarding parents guiding their children isapplicable to everyone regardless of one having different religiouspractice, or cultural perspective or have conflicting interest whichmay affect the way they perceive the modern technologies in theirdaily lives.

There are some ideas and thoughtsconcerning Facebook privacy which has been developed in the blogdeveloped by Poh in 2013. He stated that approximately 600 millionactive people using Facebook are faced with the notion of informationgap for each of them which have been taken negligible. Nearly everyof us have a Facebook account where everyone posts his or her statusadd photos and share ideas and the perception in our minds.Nonetheless, through creation of Facebook account, it means we arepublicizing our own life to others where we are free to communicate, respond to others and interact with other people at random who alsoown a Facebook account. Another fault associated with Facebook iscyber talkers.

Cyber stalking does not only affectthe online life of a person but it also sometimes implicates theoffline life of a person. For instance, Facebook users usually likesto check in the places they wish to go and also friends can checkother friends’ places or posts the routine running routes throughmobile phone applications, and hence they become easy targets tostalkers. Such information, is accumulated and analyzed, and becomeuseful for stalking victims who are mainly teens. It may happen toeverybody but it happens to mainly the unfortunate people (Poh, 2013)

Through analyzing the blogdeveloped by Poh (2013), it was more of equal bias and treatmentwhich distinguishes what is said to be the advantage and disadvantagebrought about by the use of Facebook application. The blog has dualreasons, first it is used to tell the readers the advantages andpositive effects which result from the use of Facebook, but the otherone provides a warning to various Facebook users concerning what itmeans by publicizing one’s life. Therefore, the reason of usingFacebook and being responsible for your actions is applicable toevery Facebook user, whether you are of certain class, age or statusfor instance whether you are poor or rich, adult or child andordinary or celebrity. Each person as equal opportunities and rightsto life and any indifference needs to be ignored since all of us arehumans.

Another podcast that s to Facebooksafety and privacy is the one initiated The New York Times in 2010.It is mentioned that the features of the Facebook applications arebecoming more complicated and difficult for people to understand andits ability to showcase once profile account to the public is notappropriate because it exposes the user’s safety and privacy.According to The New York Times (2010),

&quotFacebook is giving peoplemore ways to share information and that many people havemisunderstood its innovations.&quot

In addition, there is report thathas been double increase in users using various social networks sitesfor American households. From this, it is expected an increment inworking sites like Facebook. Analyzing the podcast, it can beconcluded to initiate biasness to increasing users of Facebook henceincrease in dangers and threats have high chances of occurringwithout carrying out any experimentation or research. But the mainconcept from the article is not applicable to every individual, because there are various reasons apart from increasing Facebookusers. It may be for communication, business or related work whichneed uses of internet.

In visiting the social networkingsites especially Facebook, one must be reliable and accurate enoughto hold pertinent information. Information, the raw materialof knowledge, is power. Hence, to have reliable information is a formof power and strength over a specific knowledge. Second, the test ofreasonableness involves examining the information for consistency, objectivity, fairness, and moderateness of information in a given waythat the gathered information answers the questions consistently andfairly.

Therefore, Facebook profile safety is a trend which need to considerwhile one is active in social network sites especially Facebook amongteenagers. Every user of Facebook should take in mind the worth ofsafeguarding other peoples profile accounts. Furthermore, the abilityto invade one’s privacy has enabled various users to create fakeaccounts with unreal names or information to conceal theirconfidential information and avoid being noticed by people always onthe run of posing threats. As a result there is lack of secrecy andmajority of people have ceased being active users.
